Gelse is a municipality located in the valley of the Principális-channel. The Roman-Catholic church is in the centre of Gelse on the main road. It was built in typical Late-Baroque style. The vaulted ceiling of the church devoted to the Virgin Mary shows the coronation of Virgin Mary. It is worth having a closer a look at the protected altar painting, showing Mary’s visit to Saint Elisabeth. It is interesting to observe that Elisabeth has a slimmer belly, despite being pregnant, than Virgin Mary.
Left to the sanctuary, above the baptismal font you can see a fresco showing the baptism of Jesus Christ. The style of the paintings shows similarities with the ones in the church of Galambok, as they also are the works of Stefan Dorfmeister Jun. In the church garden there is a monument to commemorate the victims of World War I. and II. and there is also a stone cross with the figures of Virgin Mary, Saint John and Mary Magdalene. The cross was set up by inhabitants who emigrated at the beginning of the 20th century. You need a previous appointment to find the gates of the church open.
