Orosztony, a small municipality at a distance of 7 km from the Kis-Balaton, is a favoured excursion site. It has a lot to offer for those interested in history and nature.
The commander of the castle of Kanizsa, György Thúry, fell here during the Ottoman reign. A wooden headboard honours his memory at the outskirts of the village.
The Pogányvári wine-hill can be reached from the north of Orosztony in the direction of Zalaszabar and it is one most excellent grape-growing regions in Zala-county. Documents indicate that viniculture has been present here since the beginning of the 18th century.
The panorama from the 298 meters high Pogányvári hilltop onto the Kis-Balaton and the surrounding villages is scintillating. At the highest point of the wine-hill there is a meteorological station which, however, cannot be visited.
After the visit to the wine-hill you should go back to Orosztony where housewives nurture folk gastronomy traditions. They regularly prepare their specialties, the nut-cake and vanilla-sugar pretzels, whenever there is a community event.
